Skincare ingredients glossary

A plain-English guide to the actives you see on skincare labels — what each one does, who it suits, and how to use it. Not medical advice; introduce new actives one at a time, and treat persistent burning, rash, acne scarring, or changing spots as a reason to see a dermatologist rather than another shopping problem.[1]

Niacinamide

A form of vitamin B3 used for oiliness, visible pores, uneven tone, and barrier support. It is usually well tolerated, which is why it appears in routines for oily, acne-prone, sensitive, and anti-aging goals. It is not an instant pore eraser; judge it over weeks and pair it with sunscreen when tone is the target.[2]

Retinol & retinoids

Vitamin A derivatives that influence cell turnover and are used for acne, texture, fine lines, and photoaging. Retinoids are usually nighttime products, should be introduced slowly, and require daily sunscreen. Avoid retinoids during pregnancy unless your clinician specifically clears them.[3][4]

Salicylic acid (BHA)

An oil-soluble beta hydroxy acid used for clogged pores, blackheads, and oily or acne-prone skin. Because it can be drying, it works best as one part of a routine that still includes moisturizer. Do not stack it immediately with every other acne active if your skin is new to treatment.

Hyaluronic acid (HA)

A humectant that binds water for lightweight hydration and a plumper look. Apply it to slightly damp skin, then seal with moisturizer, especially in dry weather. Hyaluronic acid is helpful for dehydration but does not replace the richer barrier ingredients dry skin may need.[5][6]

Vitamin C

An antioxidant used for dullness, uneven tone, and photoprotection support. It commonly belongs in the morning under sunscreen, but it can sting sensitive skin, especially in low-pH ascorbic acid formulas. If vitamin C irritates you, niacinamide or azelaic acid may be a gentler tone route.[7][8]

Benzoyl peroxide

An acne active that targets acne-associated bacteria and inflammation. It can be very useful for inflamed breakouts, but it can also dry skin and bleach towels, pillowcases, or clothing. Introduce it slowly and keep moisturizer in the routine.[9][10]

AHAs (glycolic, lactic acid)

Water-soluble alpha hydroxy acids that exfoliate the surface to smooth texture and brighten dull skin. AHAs can make skin feel polished, but overuse causes stinging, flaking, and barrier trouble. Use sunscreen consistently when exfoliating, and avoid using strong acids on irritated skin.

Ceramides

Lipids that are part of the skin barrier. Moisturizers with ceramides are especially useful when the routine is trying to reduce dryness, sensitivity, or active-related irritation. They are not flashy, but they help make the rest of the routine tolerable.[11]

Broad-spectrum SPF

Sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB. For daily skincare, look for broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, apply enough, and reapply during extended outdoor exposure. Sunscreen is the anchor step for anti-aging and hyperpigmentation routines.[12][13]

Azelaic acid

A multi-tasking ingredient used for acne, redness-prone skin, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It can be a useful option when someone wants tone support without the same irritation profile as stronger acids, though tingling and dryness can still happen.[14]

Petrolatum

A highly effective occlusive ingredient that helps reduce water loss. It is useful for very dry patches, lips, compromised barriers, and sealing, but acne-prone users may prefer using it only on dry areas instead of the whole face.

Fragrance-free

A label that matters for dry, sensitive, eczema-prone, or allergy-prone skin. “Unscented” is not always the same thing; a product can smell neutral because masking fragrance was added. If products sting or rashes repeat, fragrance-free basics and patch testing are smarter than guessing.[15][1]

Mineral sunscreen

Sunscreen that uses mineral UV filters such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Mineral formulas are often preferred by sensitive users and can be useful around the eyes, but they may leave a cast depending on skin tone and tint.
